Rules of Summer

By Shaun Tan

Rules of Summer

Two boys explain the occasionally mysterious “rules” they learned over the summer, like never eat the last olive at a party, never ruin a perfect plan, and never give your keys to a stranger.

Rating: 2 **

An extremely confusing and bizarre book in both words and illustrations. Not sure it’s meant for children, or if it’s supposed to be funny, satirical or just weird.

Tacky The Penguin

By Helen Lester

Tacky The Penguin

Tacky is an odd bird who marches to the beat of a different drummer. Tacky’s perfect friends find him annoying until his eccentric behavior saves the day.

Rating: *****

Your child will love tacky. It’s a fun story about conventions and conformism.

Suggested Activity: Watch the animated movie Happy Feet. It’s very similar to Tacky.
