Telephone

Summary: In this picture book a string of birds on a telephone wire plays a game of telephone, with the usual mixed up results.

It has a cute ending but much of the book doesn’t make sense.

Shh! We Have a Plan

Summary: Four friends creep through the woods, and what do they spot? An exquisite bird high in a tree! ‘Hello birdie,’ waves one. ‘Shh! We have a plan,’ hush the others. They stealthily make their advance, nets in the air. Ready one, ready two, ready three, and go! But as one comically foiled plan follows another, it soon becomes clear that their quiet, observant companion, hand outstretched, has a far better idea.

Rating: 4 ****

A cute book about how to and how not to attract animals in nature.

Surprise

Summary: Colorful birds and their chicks depict the different stages of parenthood, such as caring, comforting, teasing and letting go.

Rating: 3 ***

A beautifully illustrated and colorful book covering a mama bird and her baby chicks. Especially cute is how Van Hout integrated the chicks into the different words describing their stages of life.

Aviary Wonders Inc.

Summary: In a future when deforestation and other environmental factors have caused many bird species to go extinct, businessman Alfred Wallis offers a catalog of parts for creating replacements, from hand-carved beaks to Italian-leather feet.

Rating: 4 ****

A really nifty concept book. Samworth creates a really unique catalogue and world for fantastical creations of birds. It is hard to read as a book though.
