The Princess and the Pony

By: Kate Beaton

Princess and the Pony

Summary: Princess Pinecone would like a real war horse for her birthday, instead of which she gets a plump, cute pony–but sometimes cuteness can be a kind of weapon, especially in a fight with dodgeballs and spitballs and hairballs and squareballs.

Rating: 3 ***

Beaton does a fun job playing with gender roles and expectations.

Finnegan and Fox

When a child goes missing in New York City’s Times Square, Finnegan the police horse leads his partner, Fox, to the rescue.

Rating: 4 ****

It’s more a story about how the horses are cared for and what they do all day than about the little girl. If you have a child interested in horses this would be a good book.
