Kid Sheriff and the Terrible Toads

Written By: Bob Shea
Illustrated By: Lane Smith

Kid Sheriff and the Terrible Toads

The Toad brothers are wreaking havoc in Drywater Gulch when a boy with no experience but immense knowledge of dinosaurs rides into town on his tortoise and declares himself the new sheriff.

Rating: 3 ***

This book is very confusing. Toads are never explained to be people. The protagonist is a boy who keeps talking about dinosaurs but the story has to do with a group of criminal people. Maybe it’s supposed to be funny because of the misunderstanding, but it doesn’t come across.

Boom Town

Written By Sonia Levitin
Illustrated by Cat Bowman Smith

Boom Town

After her family moves to California where her father goes to work in the gold fields, Amanda decides to make her own fortune baking pies and she encourages others to provide the necessary services–from a general store to a school–that enables her town to prosper.

Rating: 4 ****

A cute story, but odd that the rest of the family is not as ambitious or even realizes the potential around them like the little girl does.
